How I Got My Volume Back After Hair Loss - Damernas Värld

DV's beauty editor Anja Skeppe Grahn shares her personal journey with hair loss and how she managed to stop losing hair — and even achieved better hair growth than before.

Hair Loss: Stress, Hormones, and Genetics

Hair loss can have various causes, including androgenetic alopecia, where hormonal and genetic factors play a role. Women, for example, may notice this after menopause when estrogen levels drop. Hereditary hair loss involves hair follicles gradually shrinking and producing finer strands until they stop producing hair altogether, making early treatment crucial.

Telogen effluvium, stress-triggered hair loss, is often temporary and does not lead to hair follicle degeneration. Unlike hereditary hair loss, telogen effluvium typically affects not only the crown but also the sides and back of the head. The most common sign is suddenly losing significantly more hair than usual.

Scalp Care

Scalp care is essential for good hair growth. The most important aspect is keeping the scalp clean. Washing your hair regularly reduces the risk of minor inflammations such as dandruff and scaling, which can irritate and hinder hair follicles. If the scalp isn't cleaned regularly, mild inflammation can easily develop, hindering hair growth.

Previously, I could go longer between washes and relied on dry shampoo, but now I wash my hair at least every third day to keep my scalp fresh and create the best possible conditions for hair to grow. Sometimes I use a detox shampoo, and I also exfoliate my scalp. I never sleep with wet hair, as a damp environment promotes irritation and microbial imbalance in the scalp.

The Final Result

Good nutrition and better iron levels stopped my hair loss. Minoxidil helped me regrow my lost hair, and with the help of the light cap and scalp care, I feel like my hair is in better condition than before.

"Women Often Get a Softer, More Subtle Result Than Men"
The technical process is the same, but the difference lies in the aesthetic planning. Women often get a softer, more subtle result, while men tend to ask for clearer hairlines. Density and quality can be just as good — provided the right indications.
